There was once a mighty prophet named Elijah. He was a mysterious man of God that seemed to come out of nowhere. We don't know anything about his past, or what his childhood was like, but we do know that God used him in great and powerful ways.
Elijah lived during the reign of King Ahab and his evil wife, Jezebel. Ahab and Jezebel did not follow the ways of God, and God punished them for it.
One time, everything came to a showdown on a mountain named Mt. Carmel. Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal, and God proved that He was the One true and living God. After God made Himself known, Elijah killed the godless prophets of Baal.
Jezebel was furious! She proclaimed that God's prophet Elijah would die!
Elijah fled from everyone. He went out into the wilderness, sad and alone. He felt like he had failed God, and he couldn't go on any longer. He was lying down under a juniper tree when God sent a special angel to care for His prophet-servant. The angel woke Elijah up, fed him, and gave him water. Soon Elijah's strength was restored and he traveled forty days to a place called Mt. Horeb, where he entered into a cave.
Elijah was longing to hear the Voice of God when a great and strong wind came. It was so strong that it tore rocks loose from the mountain. But God wasn't in the wind.
Then, there was an earthquake. But God wasn't in the earthquake.
Next came a fire, but God wasn't in the fire either.
Finally, after the huge wind, the earthquake, and the fire, God spoke to His servant, Elijah. How could God speak in a greater, more powerful way than wind, earthquake and fire? What would He send next? Was it something massive, and loud? Would it be something that people miles away would hear? Would it shake the whole earth? Nope, it was a still, small Voice.
God chose to speak to His prophet in a small, quiet way. He could have spoken many different ways, but that is what He chose. Did you know that God still speaks in a still, small Voice? If you get quiet and listen to Him, you will hear Him. He speaks to your heart. You can hear Him talking to you if you just take the time to listen. Go without all of the distractions of the world, get alone with God, and ask Him to speak to you. Then listen for that still, small Voice.
